A pallet truck is an incredibly useful device to move pallets in many industrial settings.

A pallet truck, also known as a pallet jack, jigger, pump truck, or pallet mover is a manual or electric-powered material handling device used to lift and move palletized loads along the ground. It can NOT stack pallets or put product into racking. It is commonly used in applications such as:

  • warehouses
  • distribution centers
  • manufacturing facilities
  • retail stores
  • workshops
  • Transportation / Shipping
  • other industrial settings where you need to transport heavy loads efficiently along the ground.

A typical pallet truck is equipped with a set of forks, which are flat, sturdy metal blades that can slide underneath a pallet. The forks are mounted on a wheeled chassis, allowing them to be maneuvered easily. The forks are connected to a hydraulic pump mechanism and/or an electric motor, depending on whether the pallet truck is manual or powered. Normally power pallet trucks offer powered lift and powered drive whereas Manual Pallet trucks require the opertaor to “pump” the handle to raise the load and then require manual force to push the pallet or pull the pallet to the desired locaiton where gravity allows the load to gently lower to the ground using the lever in the handle.

Pallet trucks are designed to handle standard pallet sizes and can typically lift loads weighing up to several thousand kilograms, depending on the model. They are primarily used for horizontal transportation (moving from one location to another as opposed to lifting vertically). Pallet truck forks generally are 21″ or 27″ wide by 48″ long however other dimensions are also available. Some common other fork lengths are 96″ long for double pallet handling or even 144″ long for triple pallet handling! Capacities range from as low as 2500 lbs capacity up to 8000 lbs capacity. Pallet trucks can be walk behind or Ride On units – and Ride on Units can be End Rider or Center Rider configuration (for more operator safety).

2. Advantages of Using Pallet Trucks

Here are some of the key advantages of using pallet trucks in your industry:

Increased Efficiency:

Pallet jacks help you to quickly and efficiently move palletized loads, so you can speed up your material handling processes. They can easily maneuver through tight spaces and narrow aisles, enabling efficient, safe and relatively inexpensive transportation of product around the warehouse or storage space. They are also ideal inside transport trucks due to their small size and maneuverability.

Improved Productivity:

By reducing the physical effort required to move heavy loads, a pallet truck can enhance your productivity and reduce worker fatigue. They allow a single operator to move larger and heavier loads compared to manual handling, resulting in faster workflow and increased output. Pallet trucks whether manual or powered are the least expensive material handling device available although they are limited in that they can NOT stack loads or work in racking.

Versatility:

A pallet truck is designed to handle a wide range of pallet sizes and types, making them versatile for various applications. They can accommodate both standard and non-standard pallets, allowing for greater flexibility in material handling operations. Every Operation of size likely has a Pallet truck of some sort as they are low cost and very versatile. Even your local grocery store has one or more to improve their productivity.

Cost-Effective:

A pallet jack is less expensive to purchase than a full-sized forklift.

Pallet trucks are generally much more affordable compared to other material-handling equipment, such as full-sized forklifts or Reach Trucks. They are also cheaper to maintain and require minimal / reduced training to operate. This means that you will enjoy reduced operational costs and improved safety in your operation. Operators of Power Pallet trucks do require a specific but simple and short training course in Ontario to be properly trained and RI-GO Lift Truck offers this training. Safety:

Pallet jacks are designed with safety features to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries. Because Pallet trucks are lighter and smaller they are better and safer to use in congested areas and around people. Visibility is much better when operating a pallet truck vs a forklift truck for example. Power Pallet Trucks often have great features such as:

  • Pedestrian protection Belly Button – this red button on the top of the safety handle reduces the risk of the pallet truck crushing the operator when using it in the forks trailing position against walls or other machinery.
  • Optional Stability casters can improve the units stability with tall or heavy loads especially when turning
  • Optional Load Backrests can provide increased load stability and safety if your loads are tall or wobbly.
  • Speeds can be reduced to increase safety as well in tight areas and some units come with “Curve Assist” which automatically reduces travel speed when the tiller arm is turned beyond a certain threshold.

Additionally, manual pallet trucks or Lithium powered Power Pallet Trucks eliminate the risks associated with Lead Acid battery-related incidents and eliminate battery watering and maintenance costs.

Easy Operation:

A pallet truck is relatively easy to operate, requiring very little training. Manual pallet trucks involve straightforward pumping or lever mechanisms, while powered pallet jacks offer simple control handles. This ease of operation allows for quick adoption and reduces the learning curve for operators. Operator Training is still required in Ontario to operate a Power Pallet Truck – but the course is short and less expensive than forklift or reach truck courses. Call RIGOLIFT Training experts for more info or 416-213-7277 or training@rigolift.com

Environmentally Friendly:

Manual pallet jacks do not require any fuel or electricity to operate, making them environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. Additionally, powered pallet trucks, especially electric ones, produce fewer emissions and are quieter and cleaner than other heavy machinery.

Overall, the use of a pallet truck can significantly improve material handling efficiency, worker productivity, and safety while offering cost-effective solutions for moving palletized loads.

3. Electric vs Manual Pallet Trucks

Electric Pallet Trucks:

Electric pallet jacks require less physical strength to operate than manual ones.

Electric pallet trucks are also called powered pallet jacks. They feature an electric motor and hydraulic pump for lifting and moving pallets. They are ideal for heavier loads and reduce the physical effort required by the operator. Electric pallet trucks are often equipped with additional features like power steering and programmable speed controls.

Electric pallet trucks are powered by an electric motor that can be operated with the push of a button. These trucks are typically operated by an electric control handle, which allows for easier maneuverability and eliminates the need for manual pumping and pushing/pulling.

Advantages of an Electric Pallet Truck:

Enhanced Safety: Electric pallet trucks are designed with safety features, including:

  • braking systems
  • safety handles
  • emergency stop buttons

These safety measures reduce the risk of accidents and injuries, making them a safer option for both operators and the workplace. Also because they are small and lightweight they are easier to maneuver in tight spaces (including Transport Trucks) and around people.

Reduced Maintenance: Electric pallet trucks require less maintenance compared to manual ones. They have fewer moving parts, resulting in fewer breakdowns and lower maintenance costs over time.

Improved Efficiency: Electric pallet trucks are faster in operation compared to manual ones. They can move at a faster and more consistent speed, reducing overall cycle times for material handling tasks. This increased efficiency translates to higher productivity and throughput in warehouse or distribution center operations.

Electric pallet jacks give you more control in tight spaces.

Precise Control and Maneuverability: Electric pallet trucks offer precise control and smooth handling. They have simple and very responsive controls, allowing operators to navigate with greater accuracy, especially in confined spaces and tight aisles. This results in improved maneuverability and reduced risk of accidents or product damage.

Increased Load Capacity: Electric pallet trucks can be offered in higher load capacities compared to manual ones. The electric motor provides additional power and lifting capabilities, enabling the handling of heavier loads more easily and efficiently. Manual Pallet trucks are generally 5000 lbs max capacity whereas Power Pallet trucks come in 2600 lbs, 3000 lbs, 4000 lbs, 4500 lbs, 6000 lbs, 8000 lbs, 10,000 lbs and even more in some rare cases!

Power-assisted Operation: Electric pallet trucks eliminate the need for manual pumping or pushing, as they are equipped with an electric motor. This feature reduces operator fatigue and physical exertion, allowing for longer and more comfortable working hours.

Manual pallet jacks are more basic than electric ones.

Manual pallet trucks are the most basic and widely used type of pallet trucks. In a manual pallet truck, the operator pumps a hydraulic lever to raise the forks off the ground, allowing them to lift the pallet. Once the load is raised off the ground the operator manually pulls or pushes the load into position.

By maneuvering the handle, the operator can steer the pallet truck and transport the load to the desired location. To lower the forks, the operator releases the hydraulic lever, allowing the load to descend slowly. Manual pallet trucks are typically used for lighter loads and come in various weight capacities.

Advantages of a Manual Pallet Truck:

Cost-Effectiveness: Manual pallet trucks are generally more affordable to purchase and maintain compared to electric pallet trucks. They do not require batteries, chargers, or electric components, resulting in lower initial investment and reduced long-term operating costs. Generally a manual Hand Pallet truck is under $500 CAD + Tax and Freight.

No Dependency on Power Source: Manual pallet trucks do not rely on electricity or batteries, which means they can be used anywhere, even in areas without access to power or in remote locations. This flexibility makes them suitable for outdoor applications or during power outages. They are a great backup to any operation and any situation.

Easy Training and Operation: Manual pallet trucks are straightforward to operate and require minimal training. New operators can quickly learn the proper techniques and safety protocols, reducing the learning curve and the time required for onboarding. training@rigolift.com or 416-213-7277
